Grades and Grading Policy
Assessment is a look at where a student stands in terms of mastery of a particular subject matter. For Texas schools, this centers mastery on the TEKS, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. According to LISD’s grading policy, “The primary purpose of grades is to measure and communicate what a student knows, understands, and can do as a result of the student’s learning.” Grades consist of checking for understanding or practice (formative assessments) and actual demonstrations of learning (summative assessments). It is much like any sport where you have to practice to get good at the sport, but the only thing that “counts” are the competitive games that are played.
Your grades that will count towards your average in Biology will consist of:
1. Minor Grades (individual topic assessments) - 30%
2. Major Grades (unit assessments) - 70%
These will occur in a variety of forms from quizzes to lab reports to comprehensive tests.
Report Cards will be sent home at the end of each 9 week grading period. Students will receive progress reports at the end of the 3 and 6 weeks of the grading period. You can check your grade status online through Skyward. You may also check with me before or after class, at the beginning or end of the school day, or during my conference period with any questions or concerns.
